Discovering the historic center of Le Puy-en-Velay and its iconic monuments

From Laplace, it takes only a few steps to reach the cobblestone streets of the historic center. The city reveals itself slowly as you follow its narrow passages, ancient facades, and stairways leading up to the cathedral. Built on a spectacular volcanic landscape, it offers a new perspective on the rooftops, monuments, and scenery of the Haute-Loire at every turn.

From Place du Plot to Rue des Tables

The walk begins naturally at Place du Plot, long the heart of commercial life in Le Puy. From there, Rue des Tables climbs toward the upper town. Lined with old houses, shops, and workshops, it follows the path taken for centuries by pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela.

At the summit stands the Cathedral of Notre-Dame-du-Puy. Built between the 11th and 12th centuries, it blends Romanesque, Eastern, and Byzantine influences. Its light and dark stone facade dominates the city, while its grand staircase seems to lead directly beneath the nave. Inside, the Black Madonna serves as a reminder of the sanctuary's importance in the spiritual history of Le Puy.

Adjoining the cathedral, the cloister forms a remarkable ensemble of polychrome arches and sculpted capitals. Quieter and almost removed from the city, it preserves the atmosphere of ancient monastic life.

The Hôtel-Dieu and the memory of pilgrims

A few meters away lies the Hôtel-Dieu, founded in the Middle Ages to welcome and care for pilgrims. Its former pharmacy bears witness to the essential role played by plants, medicinal preparations, and apothecary knowledge. This heritage is intimately linked to the history of Apoticari, which was born from this local culture of care and botany.

The building, renovated over the centuries, now houses spaces dedicated to heritage and creation. It is an important stop for understanding the ancient link between Le Puy, hospitality, and the pilgrimage routes to Compostela.

A city shaped by the volcano

From the heights of the cathedral, two silhouettes dominate the landscape. The Notre-Dame de France statue rises on the Rocher Corneille, an ancient volcanic remnant that has become one of the city's main viewpoints. Climbing it offers an unobstructed view of the old town's rooftops and the surrounding terrain.

A little further on, the Saint-Michel d’Aiguilhe chapel seems perched atop a needle of lava. Built in the 10th century, it is reached after climbing 268 steps. Its Romanesque architecture, frescoes, and volcanic stone create a unique place suspended above the city.

The historic center of Le Puy can be explored without a precise itinerary. You can follow a narrow alley, an archway, or a staircase before finding a lively square or an unexpected viewpoint. From Laplace, the entire old town is accessible on foot, just minutes from the inn.

Extend your discovery by staying in the rooms at Laplace, or treat yourself to a break at the Apoticari spa.
